3-match Test series:
Thanks to Rupinder Pal Singh’s two goals, the Indian men’s hockey team defeated New Zealand 4-2 in the primary match of the three-match Test series on Thursday. In the match at the Indian Sports Authority of India (SAI) center ground, Rupinder scored the second and 34th, Mandeep Singh scored 15th and Harmanpreet Singh scored in 38th minute for India. In the 26th and 55th minute, Stephen Jenness scoring a perfect field goal that narrowed the lead to 1-2.
The hosts started off in a good start, and in the second minute, the penalty corner turned out to be a 1-0 goal. For India, Rupinder scored this goal. New Zealand had the chance to equalize in the 7th minute, but Indian goalkeeper Krishan Pathak was attentive at the goalpost.
In the 15th minute of the match, India secured a 2-0 lead by Mandeep’s best goal. In the second quarter, the hosts had an opportunity to make their lead 3-0 in the 22nd minute, but their players missed it. Four minutes later, New Zealand scored a field goal of Zanies 1-2.
The Indian team continued their attack even after halftime. Mandeep scored his second goal of the match in the 34th minute and gave India a 3-1 lead. India got the penalty after four minutes, which Harmanpreet sent in the score and made the score 4-1.
In the fourth and final quarter, New Zealand started taking a hard test for Indian defenders and in the 55th minute, Genius scored his second goal of the match to score 2-4. New Zealand won two consecutive penalty corners in the last minute. But Karkera was brilliant in his efforts to save and help India win the first match 4-2.
The Indian team will play the second match of the series on July 21.
