Ireland broke the 40-year dream of India at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre
In the ongoing Women’s Hockey World Cup in London, Ireland defeated India 3-1 (0-0) to enter the semi-finals. Indian women’s hockey team was playing its quarter-final match for the first time in 40 years. Earlier, in 1974, the World Cup held in France reached the semi-finals and was 4th-position in the tournament.
Both teams could not score any goals for the fourth quarter, after which the penalty shootout was adopted, in which Ireland won the match.
Ireland’s Roisin Upton scored the first goal in the shootout which could not stop goalkeeper Savita.
After that, Meeke Alison made the second goal for Ireland, taking the 2-0 lead.
India’s Reena Khokhar scored a goal for India in the last minute, but after that Ireland managed to score another goal and made it to the semi-finals.
It was also surprising to reach the semi-finals of the 16th World Team Ireland in the World Ranking. Ireland had earlier played the World Cup in 2002.
India’s journey so far
India beat Italy 3-0 in a crossover match and made it to the quarter-finals. World number 16 team Ireland has already made history by defeating America 3-1 and India 1-0. The Indian team played 1-1 draws from England and the United States and lost 0-1 to Ireland. Ireland defeated India 2-1 in the Hockey World League semi-final in Johannesburg last year before defeating here.
